Heritage Days 2009 begins at 9:30 am, Saturday August 15 in the town of North Fork, where a new Old Toby Monument Dedication Ceremony will be held at the intersection of US Highway 93 and the Salmon River Road (near the North Fork Store). Old Toby was a Lemhi Shoshoni who served as a guide to the Lewis and Clark Expedition after Sacajawea was reunited with her people in August 1805. The original monument was placed in the 1930s and dedicated by Senator William Borah and Congressman Compton White, and was later demolished during construction work on Highway 93. Thanks to the efforts of Lemhi County residents Seth Goodman, and his father John, a new monument has been constructed, upon which the old plaques have been re-attached. On hand for the ceremony will also be members of the Idaho Governor's Lewis and Clark Trail Committee, which provided some of the funding for the new monument.
