Winter School begins Jan 3

 

Lemhi County Extension Office and Lemhi County Cattle and Horse Growers Association have teamed up to bring the everyone the Annual Cattlemen’s Winter School beginning on January 3. There will be six weeks of classes held on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. All classes are free and open to the public.

January 3, Wally Butler with Farm Bureau Federation will be to discuss Riparian pasture management as well as “surviving litigation on your rangelands”.

On January 10, the topics include BLM grazing permits and trichomoniasis. Linda Price, Bureau of Land Management Field Manager, will be there to answer your questions about BLM permits and other grazing concerns. Dr. Bill Barton, ISDA veterinarian, will discuss trichomoniasis -what it is, the implications and how it is spread.

Weed Night will be January 17. Three recertification credits have been applied for with Idaho Department of Agriculture. Diane Schuldt, Forest Service Weed Coordinator, will discuss the Forest Service Environmental Impact Statement. Daniel Bertram, Lemhi County Weed Superintendent, will discuss the permitting process coming from the Environmental Protection Agency and biological control of noxious weeds. Shannon Williams, Lemhi County Extension, will discuss weed seed dispersal by vehicles and the handling of herbicide treated livestock manure and bedding and Squeak Barsalou, will discuss Weed Free Hay Certification.

On January 24, Idaho Beef Council and Loomix will both have representatives making presentations. Shea Nesbitt, Program Manager, Idaho Beef Council will talk about how the council is utilizing beef check-off dollars. Steve Foust, Loomix Representative, will discuss beef nutrition and Loomix.

Antibiotics, Growth Implants, Record Keeping and BQA will be covered on January 31. Chuck Cox, Pfizer Animal Health, will talk about antibiotics and Growth implants. Shannon Williams, Lemhi County Extension, will discuss record keeping and beef quality assurance.

 

February 7 will be the final class and Chad Cheyney. Butte County Extension will share how to get the most out of your fall feed and pasture fertilization.
