New K-9's for County and Salmon City

On Thursday, January 26, the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office, along with Salmon PD, drove to the Twin Falls, Idaho area, where two dogs were purchased for K-9 use. Both dogs are Belgian Shepherd Dogs, commonly known as Malinois (pronounced maelinwa) are brothers. The county K-9’s name is Beaux (pronounced “Bo”) he is a 7 month old pup, weighing approx 66 lbs (in picture). Beaux’s handler was Deputy Joe Moore of the Jerome County Sheriff’s Office from Paul, Idaho. The dog will be trained by Salmon PD Sgt. Terry Stratton, in canine patrol, scent and article tracking, and drug detection. The cost to the county was $1000, however, after training, the dog will be valued at nearly $15,000. According to Sheriff Bowerman, this was an opportunity to purchase a high quality animal at a very reasonable price and will be purchased through the drug forfeiture money, which is money seized during a drug arrest or commission of a drug crime. Sgt. Stratton has offered his training services at no cost to the county, which is a win-win situation all around.
Beaux will be in training along with Deputy James Jensen and will be seen riding in the back seat of James’s Dodge truck. The city police dog “Junior”,
which is also a Malinois (maelinwa), will also be in training, and will replace “Lyka”(sp), the Salmon K-9 who died suddenly December 23rd. Both dogs are being financed through the Byrne Grant drug forfeiture fund.
The Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois) ( /ˈmælɪnwɑː/) is a breed of dog, sometimes classified as a variety of the Belgian Shepherd Dog rather than as a separate breed. The Malinois is recognized in the United States under the name Belgian Malinois. Its name is the French word for Mechlinian, which is in Dutch either Mechelse herdershond (shepherd dog from Mechelen) or Mechelaar (one from Mechelen). These dogs are popular for K-9 use in police departments, as are German Shepherds
