Committee to pass a school bond meets weekly
The “Committee to Pass a School Bond” is meeting on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 in Mr. Chinske’s Room-Room 18-at the Salmon Middle School.
After several attempts, people have asked , "Why does the school board continue to pursue a bond for the building of a new school?" The school board is held accountable for the safety issues the state inspectors identify when they come to inspect the schools.
The school board has asked the state inspector to allow the Salmon School District to put off building handicap accessible restrooms, installing a fire alarm system with audio/visual capabilities, re-carpeting rooms with tripping hazards, and deferring other structural and safety issues. The school board, in return, has committed to addressing these needs by working diligently to pass a school bond.
School board member Dorrie Prange said people have hopes the State Department of Education will condemn the schools and force us to build a new school or build one for us. But Prange said this is not going to happen. “We -- as an electorate and a community -- need to decide when to stop putting money into buildings that are maintainable only at great expense and build a building that will save us money in maintenance costs and be much less expensive to heat, light and run water and sewer to.”
One of the citizen committee’s main goals is to provide the public with factual information about the school bond proposal. The committee has toured the Pioneer Elementary and Salmon Middle School, met with Design West architect Jim Coles about the proposed new school, and committee members are preparing presentations that they intend to take to the community in January.
